Lando Norris finally has a win on the board in 2026, and it came the hard way. The McLaren driver held off Max Verstappen and a fast-recovering Kimi Antonelli to claim victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, ending a run of near-misses and delivering McLaren its first triumph of the season at the Hungaroring.
It was not a straightforward afternoon for Norris. The reigning world champion started from pole position but was beaten off the line by his own team-mate, Oscar Piastri, who made the most of a strong launch and a wide moment from Norris at Turn 2 to snatch the lead. For long stretches of the early laps, Norris found himself stuck behind Piastri on a circuit notorious for being difficult to overtake on, and his frustration was audible over team radio as he pushed McLaren to let him pit first.
McLaren, wary of triggering another team dispute so soon in the year, held Norris out and instead brought Piastri in just before half distance. That decision proved pivotal. Norris, despite running on older tyres, was able to match and then edge ahead of his team-mate’s pace, benefiting further when Piastri was delayed in traffic and clipped Carlos Sainz’s Williams while lapping the Spaniard. Norris pitted on lap 40, emerged ahead, and from there controlled the rest of the Hungarian Grand Prix comfortably.
Piastri’s afternoon then unravelled completely. Running second and still in the fight, the Australian was forced to retire with a gearbox failure that triggered a late Virtual Safety Car with 14 laps remaining — a moment that reshaped the finishing order and effectively handed Norris an unchallenged run to the chequered flag.
Behind Norris, Verstappen produced one of the drives of the weekend. The Red Bull driver had earlier pulled off a stunning move on Lewis Hamilton into Turn 1 and then held on through a gruelling final stint to secure second place. Antonelli, meanwhile, fended off a hard-charging Hamilton to claim third for Mercedes, a result that also stretched his championship advantage to 50 points over the Ferrari driver and 59 points over team-mate George Russell, who had stalled at the start before recovering to seventh.
Hamilton’s day summed up Ferrari’s mixed fortunes. Demoted three places in qualifying for impeding Piastri, the seven-time champion still made a strong start from fifth and ran competitively behind Verstappen for much of the race. But a pit-lane speeding infraction picked up during a tight pit merge with Antonelli cost him a five-second penalty, dropping him from what would have been second place down to fifth, behind both Antonelli and his own team-mate Charles Leclerc. It left Ferrari to reflect on what could have been a genuine shot at fighting Norris for the win.
Further down the order, Isack Hadjar brought his Red Bull home sixth, with Russell recovering to seventh after his poor start. Liam Lawson won a race-long scrap with Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg and Racing Bulls team-mate Arvid Lindblad to claim the final points-paying positions in what was the last grand prix before Formula 1’s four-week summer break.
Speaking after climbing from his McLaren, Norris credited the car’s pace rather than raw strategy for the win, saying it was among the best he had felt all season and that fresh tyres in the closing stint sealed the result. For Norris and McLaren, the victory arrives at a significant moment: it not only ends the team’s winless start to 2026 but also reasserts Norris’s credentials as reigning champion after Antonelli, Verstappen and Hamilton had shared the spoils in the opening rounds of the year.
Norris’s win also revives the intrigue over McLaren’s own internal title fight. The early tussle with Piastri, however brief, was a reminder that the team’s two drivers remain each other’s fiercest rivals as much as their opponents from Red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari. With the sport now heading into its summer shutdown, Norris returns to action after the break as a driver with genuine momentum, while Antonelli still leads the championship and Verstappen continues to lurk as a threat whenever Red Bull find the right setup.
Formula 1 resumes after the summer break with a sprint weekend at the Dutch Grand Prix from August 21-23, where Norris will look to build on a result that, after a difficult start to his title defence, could not have come at a better time.
