The Ebola outbreak surging through eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has now claimed more than 1,000 lives, health officials confirmed this week, marking a grim milestone in what has become the fastest-moving Ebola epidemic ever recorded. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention said 1,031 deaths had been confirmed as of Wednesday, while Congo’s own Ministry of Health separately reported 1,033 deaths among 2,536 recorded cases as of Thursday. Either count places the current Ebola crisis on a trajectory unlike anything seen in the nearly five decades since the virus was first identified.
What makes this Ebola outbreak so alarming is not just the death toll itself, but the speed at which it has climbed. Congo’s Ministry of Health declared the epidemic on May 15, and it has already surpassed 1,000 deaths in roughly two months. By comparison, the devastating 2013-2016 West Africa Ebola epidemic, the worst on record with more than 11,000 deaths, took about eight months to reach the same threshold. The World Health Organization has noted that this year’s Ebola cases climbed to 2,000 confirmed infections in just two months, compared to ten months during Congo’s 2018-2019 outbreak.
Part of what sets this Ebola strain apart is the pathogen itself. The outbreak is being driven by the Bundibugyo virus, a variant for which no approved vaccine or treatment currently exists, unlike the Zaire strain for which effective vaccines have been developed in recent years. Africa CDC director-general Dr. Jean Kaseya said the lack of vaccines, medicine, and funding is directly costing lives, and he has warned that without a rapid escalation in the response, this outbreak could become one of the worst ever documented.
The epicenter of the Ebola emergency, Ituri province, has been shaped by more than three decades of armed conflict, and the region is now home to hundreds of thousands of people living in displacement camps. Officials say roughly 80% of new Ebola cases are emerging outside known chains of transmission, meaning contact tracers cannot keep pace with the virus. Less than 9% of contacts who should be monitored are currently being tracked, according to Africa CDC, and more than 60% of Ebola deaths are occurring in the community rather than in medical care.
Community resistance has further complicated containment. Some residents have refused to allow burial teams to carry out safe Ebola burials, preferring traditional funeral practices, forcing authorities to deploy security escorts in some areas. Attacks on health workers and unpaid front-line staff have also disrupted the response, with some medical personnel going on strike over back pay even as the Ebola caseload grows.
Funding shortfalls remain a central obstacle. A joint response plan from the WHO and Africa CDC, valued at roughly $518 million, faces a shortfall exceeding $400 million. Aid groups including Doctors Without Borders say treatment centers are already stretched to capacity, forcing some Ebola patients to wait at home for a bed, raising the risk of further spread. The Ebola virus has also moved beyond Ituri into the provinces of Tshopo and Haut-Uele, including Kisangani, a major trading hub of over a million people with direct transport links to the capital, Kinshasa.
Researchers at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have modeled a worst-case scenario in which the outbreak could approach the scale of the 2014-2016 West African epidemic, though some epidemiologists advising African health authorities say they do not expect it to reach that extreme. Congolese Prime Minister Judith Suminwa traveled to the affected region this week alongside U.S. and United Nations officials to assess conditions on the ground, as the international community weighs how urgently to scale up funding and support before the Ebola death toll climbs further.
