Israeli Strikes Kill at Least 13 in Gaza as Egypt Hosts New Ceasefire Talks

At least 13 people were killed and dozens more injured across the Gaza Strip on Sunday in Israeli military strikes, according to reports from local sources, as Egypt hosted a new round of talks involving Hamas and other Palestinian factions aimed at preserving the current ceasefire arrangements and advancing negotiations.

The reported attacks occurred in the al-Mawasi area near Khan Younis, as well as in Gaza City and Deir el-Balah, according to information gathered by media outlets covering developments on the ground.

The latest violence comes despite a U.S.-brokered ceasefire that has largely halted large-scale fighting since October 2025. However, negotiations over a broader agreement including the withdrawal of Israeli forces, the future of Hamas’s armed wing, and plans for Gaza’s reconstruction have yet to produce a breakthrough.

According to sources familiar with the Cairo discussions, Hamas representatives told mediators from Egypt, Qatar and Türkiye that ending Israeli military operations in Gaza remains essential for progress toward a longer-term agreement. The talks are expected to continue over the coming days.

Ceasefire Challenges

Although major combat operations have significantly decreased under the ceasefire, deadly incidents have continued. Reports indicate that hundreds of Palestinians have been killed and thousands injured since the truce took effect, while several Israeli soldiers have also been killed during the same period.

Residential buildings, markets, vehicles and other civilian locations have reportedly been struck in various incidents. Humanitarian organizations have also expressed concern over repeated displacement orders issued to residents in affected areas.

Negotiations over the next phase of the ceasefire remain stalled. The framework envisioned further exchanges involving detainees and hostages, discussions over Hamas’s military capabilities, and the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from parts of Gaza. However, disagreements over these issues have prevented implementation.

Husam Badran, a member of Hamas’s political bureau, recently stated that the group is not prepared to surrender its weapons at this stage, saying the future of its military arsenal would be determined through broader discussions with other Palestinian factions.

The war in Gaza has resulted in extensive destruction, widespread displacement, and a significant humanitarian crisis. Casualty figures and assessments of the conflict vary by source, while international organizations and governments continue to call for a durable ceasefire and expanded humanitarian access to the territory.
