Australia produced one of the biggest shocks of this year’s World Cup on Sunday, beating Turkey 2-0 in their Group D opener at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver. The result came after head coach Tony Popovic made a series of selection decisions that surprised almost everyone before kickoff.
The most striking change saw 22-year-old Patrick Beach handed the goalkeeper’s jersey ahead of long-serving captain Maty Ryan, despite Beach having made only two senior appearances before the match. Popovic also dropped vice-captain Jackson Irvine, bringing in 21-year-old Paul Okon-Engstler in midfield. In all, ten players in Australia’s starting eleven were making their World Cup debuts in front of a packed Vancouver crowd.
Turkey arrived in Canada for their first World Cup appearance since 2002, carrying one of the most talented squads in their history. Real Madrid playmaker Arda Guler, Juventus forward Kenan Yildiz and captain Hakan Calhanoglu were all expected to give the team the edge, with Calhanoglu having suggested before the tournament that his side’s quality would allow them to overpower Australia.
For much of the match, Turkey lived up to that billing. They held the majority of possession and pushed Australia back for long periods, but found Beach in inspired form between the posts. The young goalkeeper produced several important saves that kept the scoreline in Australia’s favour through a tense opening period.
Australia took the lead through winger Nestory Irankunda, whose finish gave the Socceroos an advantage they would not relinquish. Turkey responded with sustained pressure, and midfielder Abdulkerim Bardakci came close to levelling the score when his powerful shot from outside the area flew toward goal. Beach got the faintest touch on the ball, diverting it onto the post and preserving Australia’s lead.
Beach continued to deny Turkey after the break, tipping a free kick from Guler behind for a corner just after the hour mark. With Turkey still searching for a breakthrough, Australia struck again in the 75th minute. Connor Metcalfe collected the ball in midfield, drove forward unchallenged and struck a shot from around 25 yards that flew into the net to make it 2-0.
The victory leaves Australia level on three points with the United States at the top of Group D, and the two sides are now set to meet in Seattle next Saturday in a match that could decide who advances from the group at this World Cup.
Speaking afterwards, Popovic said he had long believed in Beach’s ability and felt the occasion suited his young goalkeeper rather than overwhelming him. Former Socceroos forward Harry Kewell, working as a television analyst, said the performance had answered the doubts that surrounded Australia heading into the World Cup, noting that results on the pitch speak louder than predictions made beforehand.
For Turkey, the defeat is a difficult start to their long-awaited return to the World Cup, though Group D remains tightly contested with two matches still to play. Australia, Turkey, the United States and Paraguay are all still chasing a place in the knockout rounds, and Saturday’s result has reshuffled the group’s outlook heading into the final round of fixtures.
