Anthony Taylor, one of English football’s most recognizable referees, has announced his retirement from elite officiating, bringing to a close a 16-year career in the Premier League that was capped by a World Cup appointment this summer.
Anthony Taylor, 47, took charge of 831 matches across the English, European and international game over more than two decades. His final assignment came at the FIFA World Cup in the United States, where he officiated the round-of-16 tie between Portugal and eventual champions Spain.
In a statement released through Pro Ref, the body that oversees professional match officials in England, Anthony Taylor said stepping away now felt like the right moment after years operating under intense scrutiny. “Officiating at the elite level has been an immense privilege, but the pressure is intense and the scrutiny is constant. The time is now right to step aside and look forward to transitioning to the next chapter of my career,” he said.
Across 16 seasons in the Premier League, Anthony Taylor refereed 432 top-flight matches, more than almost any other official of his generation, and he was regularly entrusted with the biggest domestic occasions. He took charge of the FA Cup finals in 2017 and 2020, the League Cup final in 2015, the Community Shield in 2015 and the Championship play-off final in 2018, giving him a rare distinction of having officiated every major domestic cup final in English football.
His profile extended well beyond England’s shores. Anthony Taylor spent 14 years on the FIFA International List, during which he took charge of 163 international fixtures. That span included two FIFA World Cups, in 2022 and 2026, two UEFA European Championships, in 2020 and 2024, and two FIFA Club World Cups, in 2022 and 2025. Among the marquee assignments on his résumé are the 2020 UEFA Super Cup, the 2021 UEFA Nations League final, the 2022 FIFA Club World Cup final, the 2023 UEFA Europa League final and a UEFA Champions League semi-final in 2024.
Before establishing himself among Europe’s leading referees, he worked as an additional assistant referee at several showpiece finals, including the 2014 UEFA Super Cup, the 2015 UEFA Europa League final, and the finals of the 2016 UEFA Champions League and European Championships.
The retirement has not been without its difficult moments. Taylor was targeted by supporters at an airport in Hungary in 2023 following criticism from a club manager after a European final defeat, an episode he later described as the most serious abuse he faced during his career, made worse because family members were traveling with him at the time.
Howard Webb, Pro Ref’s chief refereeing officer, paid tribute to the departing official. “Anthony has been a fantastic servant to the game over many years, both domestically and on the international stage,” Webb said, adding that his professionalism and support for younger officials made him “a role model to many.”
In his own statement, the referee thanked his assistants, colleagues and family for their support through what he called the sacrifices the job demanded. His final Premier League appearance came on the season’s last day, when he took charge of a match involving West Ham United, before his World Cup send-off in the United States brought the curtain down on one of the most decorated officiating careers of his generation.
No replacement timeline has been set, with English football’s governing bodies expected to address the vacancy left at the top of the officiating pyramid in the coming weeks. For now, tributes continue to pour in from across the game as Anthony Taylor’s departure marks the end of an era for Premier League refereeing.
