Mali Defence Minister Sadio Camara Killed in Rebel Attack

BAMAKO — Mali’s Defence Minister, General Sadio Camara, has been killed after coordinated assaults by insurgents struck military and strategic sites across the country, in one of the most serious escalations of violence since the ruling junta took power. Malian authorities confirmed his death on Sunday after initially unclear reports following the attacks.

Government officials said Camara died from wounds sustained when attackers targeted his residence in Kati, a heavily fortified town near the capital that serves as one of Mali’s most important army bases and a center of junta power. Witnesses reported explosions and prolonged gunfire around the area during the assault.

Coordinated Nationwide Assault

The attacks were attributed by multiple reports to Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin, one of the most powerful jihadist groups operating in the Sahel. Several outlets also reported cooperation with the Azawad Liberation Front, a separatist coalition active in northern Mali.

Simultaneous strikes were reported in Bamako and several northern and central towns, including Gao, Mopti, and Kidal. The scale and spread of the violence exposed the vulnerability of Mali’s military rulers despite repeated promises to restore order.

Uncertainty Over Kidal

The fate of Kidal remained contested after the assaults.

Rebel groups claimed they had retaken the city, while the Malian military said operations were ongoing and government forces had repositioned tactically. Independent confirmation of full control was not immediately available.

Kidal has long held symbolic and strategic importance in Mali’s conflict, serving as a historic stronghold for Tuareg separatist movements and a key battleground between rebels and the state.

Who Was Sadio Camara

Camara was one of the most powerful figures in Mali’s ruling junta and widely regarded as a hardline security strategist.

A career military officer born in Kati, he played a central role in the 2020 coup that ousted President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta and remained influential during the second power shift in 2021 that consolidated military rule under Assimi Goïta. He served as defence minister for much of the junta period.

Camara was also a key architect of Mali’s break with France and other Western allies, supporting closer military cooperation with Russia after relations with Paris deteriorated.

Major Blow to the Junta

His death is likely to be seen as a severe setback for Goïta’s government.

Camara was not only defence minister but one of the junta’s most influential insiders, helping shape military strategy and political decision-making. Losing such a senior figure in a direct strike on his home raises fresh questions about the regime’s ability to secure its own leadership.

Authorities imposed a curfew in Bamako and declared national mourning after the attacks.

Mali Defence Minister Sadio Camara Killed in Rebel AttackSecurity Crisis Deepens

Mali has battled overlapping jihadist insurgencies, separatist rebellions, coups, and humanitarian crises for more than a decade.

The junta justified seizing power partly on a promise to restore security. Yet militant violence has continued to spread across Mali and neighboring Burkina Faso and Niger, despite support from Russian-linked forces and repeated military campaigns.

Regional and international officials, including the United Nations, condemned the attacks and warned that instability in the Sahel remains a growing threat.

For Mali’s rulers, the killing of Sadio Camara marks not only a personal loss but one of the gravest challenges yet to their claim that military rule would bring stability.
