Ivory Coast Kick Off World Cup Campaign with a Late Win Against Ecuador

Ivory Coast launched their World Cup campaign with a hard-fought and dramatic 1-0 victory over Ecuador in their Group E opener at Philadelphia Stadium on Sunday night. It was a win that came in the most nerve-shredding of fashions thanks to a 90th minute stunning goal from substitute Amad Diallo.

The match was billed as one of the most intriguing clashes in the World Cup, pitting two nations with genuine ambitions of reaching the knockout rounds against each other. Ecuador had travelled to Philadelphia full of confidence, boasting a remarkable unbeaten run of 19 matches spanning almost two years. They arrived at this World Cup with a settled squad, a pacy attack led by the experienced Enner Valencia, and the belief that they could make a serious impact on the tournament.

For Ivory Coast, the stakes were equally high: a side blessed with attacking talent and still hungry to prove that their golden generation can finally deliver on the biggest stage.

Ecuador made the stronger start, dictating possession and pressing the Elephants high up the pitch. The South Americans were unfortunate not to take the lead in the opening 45 minutes when John Yeboah struck the crossbar with a well-struck effort, and Alan Minda also rattled the woodwork shortly after.

Ivory Coast captain Franck Kessié conceded three yellow cards for his side in an aggressive but disjointed first half, as Emerse Faé’s team struggled to find their rhythm. Ivory Coast’s best chance fell to Yan Diomande, the dynamic young winger who repeatedly troubled Ecuador’s defence down the right flank but was unable to provide the decisive final ball.

The second half was a different proposition. Ivory Coast, energised and reorganised at the break, gradually seized control of proceedings. The introduction of Manchester United winger Amad Diallo in the 56th minute proved to be a pivotal decision by coach Faé. Diomande shifted to the left flank and immediately looked more dangerous, creating a series of dangerous overlapping moves as the clock ticked away. Nicolas Pepe went close with a stinging shot, only for a last-ditch block from Moises Caicedo to deny what looked a certain goal.

The tension inside the stadium was palpable, with Ecuador holding on desperately and Ivory Coast probing relentlessly. Then, in the 90th minute, the moment arrived. Diomande delivered a precise cross from the right, and Diallo controlled the ball superbly before slotting it into the left bottom corner past goalkeeper Hernan Galindez.

The Philadelphia Stadium, packed with thousands of yellow Ecuador shirts, fell briefly silent before erupting on the Ivory Coast end. Diallo wheeled away in celebration, swamped by teammates. Ibrahim Sangaré carried him off the ground in jubilation. It was the winner. It was everything. The victory also sealed Africa’s first three points of the 2026 World Cup, a distinction that will only add to the pride of this special Ivorian group.

The win is particularly significant given the context of Group E. Germany had earlier in the day demolished debutants Curaçao 7-1 in Houston, sending out an emphatic statement of intent and reminding the rest of the group that they are the team to beat. Ivory Coast now sit second in the table, three points ahead of Ecuador and Curaçao, with a clash against the four-time World Cup champions Germany next on the horizon on June 20.

Meanwhile, Faé’s side were not without flaws on Sunday night. The first-half indiscipline, the missed chances, and the moments of defensive frailty will all need addressing before they face a German side that was simply ruthless. Yet this team also showed exactly the qualities that could take them deep into this World Cup.
