Over 50 Feared Dead as Gunmen Attack Plateau State on Palm Sunday

What began as a sacred day of reflection and celebration quickly turned into one of the darkest nights for residents of Zikke village in Plateau State.

Just hours after Palm Sunday observances, armed attackers descended on the quiet farming community, leaving death, destruction, and grief in their wake.

Death Toll

At least 54 people were killed in the late hours of April 13 in Zikke, a village of roughly 3,000 residents located in Bassa County, west of Jos. Survivors describe a coordinated assault marked by gunfire, arson, and chaos. By the time the violence subsided, homes had been reduced to ashes, families torn apart, and the entire community displaced.

Eyewitness accounts and local leaders attribute the attack to suspected Fulani ethnic militias. According to residents, the assailants stormed the village in the evening, shooting indiscriminately and setting homes ablaze. With no functional communication network and limited road access, escape proved difficult. The absence of local vigilante protection left the village especially vulnerable, making it an easy target.

The brutality of the attack has left lasting psychological scars. Many victims, including women, children, and the elderly, were reportedly burned alive in their homes. Survivors recount the unbearable experience of returning to smoldering compounds filled with the remains of loved ones. For many, the trauma did not end when the gunfire stopped.

The assault reportedly lasted over an hour before security forces arrived. By then, most of the destruction had already been carried out. Residents have since questioned the delayed response, noting that security personnel were stationed within reachable distance of the village.

In the aftermath, 51 victims were laid to rest in a mass grave, while three others received individual Christian burials. The burial service, led by Rev. Hezekiah Mukan of the Christian Association of Nigeria, became both a moment of mourning and a call for resilience. Drawing from scripture, he urged grieving families to hold onto hope even in the face of unimaginable loss.

Among those deeply affected is Pastor Ishaku Mathew Kure of the Baptist Church in Zikke, who lost 10 members of his congregation. He described hearing gunshots before witnessing the attackers approach, some communicating in both Fulani and English. Escaping through a back exit with his family, he later watched from a distance as the village burned.

“We lived peacefully before this,” he said. “Now our people are gone, our homes destroyed, and our community scattered.”

Pastor Kure also voiced frustration over what he described as unequal access to weapons. He questioned how attackers were able to acquire firearms while local residents remained defenseless, pointing to what many see as a broader failure of security policy.

The scale of destruction is staggering. Community members report that at least 103 households were destroyed, displacing the entire population. Survivors recount fleeing in darkness, with many unable to outrun the attackers. The most vulnerable — children, the elderly, and the injured were among those killed.

Amnesty International described the killings as a consequence of “inexcusable security lapses” and called for a thorough investigation, emphasizing that condemnation alone is insufficient without justice and accountability.

The Insecurity Pattern in Plateau

The violence in Zikke is not an isolated incident but part of a broader pattern of insecurity in Plateau State. Between December 2023 and February 2024, over 1,300 people were killed across the region, including hundreds of women and children. Tens of thousands have been displaced, fueling concerns about a sustained campaign of violence against rural communities.

Local officials have echoed these concerns. Eli Bako, a lawmaker representing the affected constituency, described the situation as dire, warning that continued attacks could lead to the complete depopulation of vulnerable communities. He criticized what he called selective disarmament practices, alleging that while local residents are stripped of weapons, armed groups continue to operate freely.

Plateau State authorities have condemned the attack and pledged action. Government officials described the violence as a serious threat to the fragile peace in the region and urged residents to remain calm while security agencies pursue those responsible. Assurances have been made regarding increased troop deployment, emergency aid, and medical support for survivors.

At the national level, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration has previously announced measures aimed at addressing insecurity. However, many residents argue that such efforts have yet to produce meaningful change on the ground. The events in Zikke have only deepened skepticism and heightened fears among already vulnerable populations.

Adding to the humanitarian response, international aid organizations have begun delivering emergency relief. Faith-based groups have provided food, medicine, and support to displaced families, though access remains a challenge in remote areas.

Despite these efforts, the sense of loss remains overwhelming. For survivors, the attack represents not only a moment of violence but the collapse of a once-peaceful way of life. Entire families have been wiped out, livelihoods destroyed, and a community scattered.

As investigations continue and calls for justice grow louder, the people of Zikke are left to grapple with grief and uncertainty. Their stories stand as a stark reminder of the human cost of ongoing violence in Plateau State and the urgent need for lasting solutions.
