France Kick Off Their World Cup Campaign with a 3-1 Victory Over Senegal

France delivered a commanding statement of intent at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday, defeating Senegal 3-1 in a high-profile Group I opener at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. A brace from Kylian Mbappe and a goal from Bradley Barcola ensured that the French team sealed up the victory in an emphatic way. As for Senegal, their consolation goal came from a wonderful strike by Ibrahim Mbaye towards the end of the match.

Les Bleus, widely regarded as the favourites to lift the World Cup trophy, backed up that billing with a display of quality and composure that left little doubt about their credentials heading into the rest of the competition. From the outset, it was clear that manager Didier Deschamps had gone into this World Cup with all guns blazing.

The France starting lineup featured a front four that many observers described as the best attacking unit assembled by any nation at this tournament. Kylian Mbappe led the line, flanked by Ousmane Dembele, Michael Olise, and the highly-rated Desire Doue. Even on the bench, France could call upon the likes of Rayan Cherki, Bradley Barcola, and Marcus Thuram, which is a depth that most World Cup rivals can only dream of.

France’s history at major tournaments provided the context for just how important the result was. They lifted the World Cup in 2018 in Russia and came agonisingly close in Qatar four years later, falling to Argentina in one of the most dramatic finals the competition has ever produced. Deschamps, who has announced he will step down after this tournament, is desperate to bow out with another World Cup medal around his neck, and this dominant opening victory has set France on the right path.

Senegal, to their credit, did not come to MetLife Stadium simply to roll over. Under their experienced squad leaders like Sadio Mane, Kalidou Koulibaly and goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, the Lions of Teranga set up in their familiar counter-attacking shape and made life difficult for France in the opening exchanges. Their goal scored against the run of play, proved just how dangerous this African side can be on the break.

Nevertheless, France’s class ultimately proved the difference. The three goals they put past Eduoard Mendy were a mixture of individual brilliance and crisp team combination play that would have sent a shiver down the spines of rival coaches watching on.

Mbappe, orchestrating much of France’s best attacking work, was at the centre of everything positive Les Bleus produced. His movement off the ball, his pace in behind, and his cool finishing touch were all on display, and it was no surprise that he had a hand in France’s opener.

Tactically, Deschamps set his side up with familiar discipline. The midfield trio of Aurelien Tchouameni, Adrien Rabiot, and Olise provided both solidity and creativity in equal measure, ensuring that Senegal’s talented midfielders like Idrissa Gueye, Nampalys Camara, and Pathe Gueye, were kept quiet for long stretches. Defensively, William Saliba and Dayot Upamecano looked assured at centre-back, while Theo Hernandez provided his customary attacking thrust from left-back.

For Senegal, this World Cup campaign now requires a swift reset. The Lions have the players to qualify from this group, but they must now win their remaining two fixtures. Mane, who has led the line for his country for many years and remains a world-class talent, will be the figure Aliou Cisse’s men look to for inspiration. Unfortunately, Senegal were stripped of their AFCON title earlier this year following a governing body appeal, so there is extra motivation coursing through this squad to prove a point on the global stage.

Following the conclusion of this match, both teams would be hoping to scale through the group stage to the next stage of the tournament. France plays Iraq next while Senegal will take on Norway with the hope of winning the fixture. Currently, France sits comfortably at the top of the Group I table after starting their World Cup campaign on a strong note.
