The full line-up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been confirmed, completing the expanded 48-team field for what will be the largest edition in the tournament’s history.
DR Congo and Iraq secured the final qualification spots following the conclusion of intercontinental play-offs on March 31, bringing an end to a global qualifying campaign that began in September 2023.
16 Host Cities Across North America
Matches will be played in 16 cities from June 11 to July 19.
The United States will host the majority of venues with 11 cities, while Mexico will stage games in three cities and Canada in two.
The multi-country setup is designed to spread the event across North America, tapping into large stadium infrastructure, transport networks, and massive football audiences across the continent.
Longest World Cup Ever
The 2026 tournament will run for a record 39 days.
That is a notable increase from the 29-day schedule in Qatar in 2022 and the 32-day tournaments held in Brazil in 2014 and Russia in 2018.
The longer calendar reflects the increased number of teams and matches, as well as the need to manage travel and recovery across a vast geographic area.
Italy Miss Out in Major Shock
One of the biggest shocks of qualifying came as four-time champions Italy failed to reach the tournament after being eliminated by Bosnia and Herzegovina. Their absence extends a difficult recent spell on the international stage.
Elsewhere in Europe, Czech Republic, Turkey, and Sweden also secured qualification.
Global Qualification Complete
DR Congo booked their place with victory over Jamaica, while Iraq secured their return to the World Cup after defeating Bolivia.
Of the 48 teams, 43 qualified through continental competitions, three qualified automatically as hosts, and two advanced via intercontinental play-offs.
New Group Stage Format
The competition will use a fresh format built around 12 groups of four teams.
The top two sides in each group will automatically qualify for the knockout rounds, joined by the eight best third-placed teams.
That structure sends 32 teams into the elimination stage, creating a new round of 32 before the traditional last 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final.
Organizers believe the format will preserve group-stage drama while allowing more nations to remain competitive deeper into the tournament.

Football Lovers May Have Some Difficult Times Ahead
Opening Match at Estadio Azteca
The tournament will begin with Mexico facing South Africa at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
The iconic venue is one of world football’s most historic stadiums and has previously hosted World Cup finals, adding symbolic weight to the opening match.
The game will take place 18 days after the conclusion of the Premier League season, giving players limited turnaround before joining national teams.
Final at MetLife Stadium
The new world champion will be crowned on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
The venue, located near New York City, is expected to host one of the most watched sporting events in the world.
A New Era for the World Cup
The expanded 48-team format is intended to give more nations a realistic path to qualification and broader representation from Africa, Asia, North America, and smaller football regions.
Critics have raised concerns about fixture congestion, travel demands, and dilution of quality, while supporters argue the new structure will generate more stories, more fans, and more global participation.
Either way, the 2026 World Cup is set to redefine the tournament’s scale and usher in a new era for international football.
Kick-off Times Create Late Nights for European Viewers
The 2026 FIFA World Cup schedule is set to create challenging viewing hours for fans in Europe, with matches spread across four North American time zones and venues separated by as much as 2,800 miles.
Because the tournament is being staged across United States, Canada, and Mexico, organizers will use 13 different kick-off times during the competition.
For audiences in the United Kingdom and much of Europe, that means a significant number of games will begin after midnight British Summer Time.

Midnight and Overnight Matches for UK Fans

A large portion of the group stage will take place during overnight hours for British viewers.
In total, 35 group-stage matches will kick off between 00:00 BST and 05:00 BST. That is nearly half of the 72 fixtures in the opening phase of the tournament.
For supporters hoping to watch every match live, it means many sleepless nights during June and early July.
Kansas City Among Toughest Venues for Europe
Kansas City will be particularly difficult for UK viewers. All five of its group-stage matches are scheduled in the middle of the night British time.
The earliest of those is Tunisia versus Netherlands at 00:00 BST on Friday, June 26.
The latest is Algeria against Austria at 03:00 BST on Sunday, June 28.
5 AM Starts in West Coast Cities
Some of the latest kick-off times for European viewers will come from the west coast.
The San Francisco Bay Area will stage two matches beginning at 05:00 BST.
Most Common Kick-off Time
Despite the overnight fixtures, the single most common start time in the group stage will be 20:00 BST.
A total of 12 group matches are scheduled for that slot, making it the most viewer-friendly time for audiences in Britain and parts of Europe.
Global Tournament, Global Timetable
The scheduling challenge reflects the reality of a truly continental World Cup. With matches stretching from eastern North America to the Pacific coast, broadcasters and fans around the world will need to adapt.
For European supporters, the 2026 World Cup may deliver thrilling football, but it will also demand coffee, alarms, and late-night stamina.
