South Korea Open World Cup Campaign with Comeback Win Against Czechia

South Korea launched their World Cup 2026 campaign in dramatic fashion on Thursday night, coming from behind to defeat Czechia 2-1 in a Group A encounter at Guadalajara Stadium in Zapopan, Mexico. It was a result that underlined the resilience of a South Korean side determined to make their mark at this expanded and eagerly anticipated World Cup.

The match, played in front of a crowd of just under 45,000 began as a cautious, uninspiring affair. Both teams left the field at half-time to a chorus of jeers, with neither side managing to carve out a genuine opportunity of note. For a South Korean team hoping to build momentum early in the World Cup, the opening 45 minutes offered little encouragement.

The situation grew worse after the restart when Czechia, making their first World Cup appearance since 2006, broke the deadlock in the 59th minute. Captain Ladislav Krejci rose to head home from a long throw-in into the penalty area, and suddenly South Korea found themselves staring at a potential opening-match defeat.

What followed, however, was a testament to the character of this South Korean squad. Hwang In-beom provided the spark the team needed, levelling the scores in the 67th minute with a moment of individual brilliance. Receiving the ball under pressure, Hwang faked a shot to wrong-foot two Czech defenders before coolly finishing to draw his side level. It was exactly the kind of World Cup moment that defines careers.

Hwang was not finished there. Thirteen minutes later, the midfielder turned provider, delivering a precise cross from the right flank that Oh Hyeon-gyu met to head home and give South Korea a lead they would not relinquish. The goal sparked jubilation among the Korean supporters in the stadium and sent a message to the rest of Group A that this team could not be underestimated.

Led by captain and star forward Son Heung-min, South Korea controlled possession for much of the match and outshot their opponents, though early profligacy in front of goal made the second half far more tense than it needed to be. The Czechs, ranked 38th by FIFA, proved stubborn and compact, but ultimately could not resist the Korean pressure as the game wore on.

The result places South Korea second in Group A on three points, level with group leaders Mexico, who earlier in the day had beaten South Africa 2-0 in a separate World Cup opener at the iconic Estadio Azteca. Czechia sit third and South Africa bottom, both still searching for their first World Cup points of the tournament.

With the 2026 World Cup expanded to 48 teams for the first time, the tournament is being hosted across three nations — the United States, Canada, and Mexico — making it the largest edition of football’s showpiece event in history. South Korea, ranked 25th by FIFA, will next face hosts Mexico on June 18 in what promises to be a blockbuster Group A contest. A second straight World Cup win would go a long way toward securing their place in the round of 32.

World Cup

For now, though, South Korea can reflect on a job done the hard way. The World Cup campaign is off to the best possible start, and Hwang In-beom’s performance, racking up a goal and an assist from midfield, will live long in the memory of Korean football fans watching around the globe.
