The long-running mystery surrounding the killing of rap legend Tupac Shakur is finally heading to trial in Las Vegas, nearly three decades after the artist was fatally wounded in a drive-by shooting.
Duane “Keffe D” Davis, who was 63 when he was charged, faces a murder count alleging that he participated in a gang-related killing. Davis has pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors are not claiming that he personally fired the shots that struck Shakur. Instead, they are expected to argue that Davis helped organize the attack and supplied the firearm used in the shooting.
The Tupac Shakur murder trial is taking place in Clark County District Court, with Judge Carli Kierny presiding. Jury selection is expected to take several days before opening arguments and testimony begin. The proceedings are expected to last about a month.
Shakur was 25 when he was shot in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996. He was riding in a BMW with Death Row Records co-founder Marion “Suge” Knight after attending a boxing event. The pair were travelling toward Club 662 when a white Cadillac pulled alongside their vehicle and gunfire erupted.
Shakur was struck several times. Knight was also injured but survived. Shakur was taken to a hospital, where he died six days later.
For years, investigators were unable to bring charges in a case that became one of the most closely watched unsolved killings in music history. Interest in the investigation intensified after Davis publicly discussed the shooting and later described his involvement in a memoir.
Authorities arrested Davis in 2023, bringing the case back into the spotlight and setting the stage for the trial now underway.
Prosecutors are expected to focus heavily on Davis’ alleged role in arranging the attack rather than trying to establish that he was the gunman. His own account has acknowledged that he obtained a firearm and placed it inside the Cadillac used by the group that night.
One of the people long associated with the suspected shooting was Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, Davis’ nephew. Anderson was never charged in connection with Shakur’s death and was killed in an unrelated gang shooting in California two years after the rapper’s death.
Two other men believed to have been inside the Cadillac, Deandrae “Freaky” Smith and Terry “Bubble Up” Brown, have also since died.
The prosecution is expected to present a large number of witnesses during the proceedings. Potential witnesses include people who encountered Shakur shortly before the shooting, individuals connected to Davis and the gangs involved in the wider conflict, former law enforcement officers and people who worked around Death Row Records.
Among those expected to testify is Leonard Jefferson, who was driving near Shakur’s BMW shortly before the shooting. Jefferson took a photograph of the rapper that has become widely recognized as the last known image of Shakur before his death.
Another anticipated witness is Denvonta Lee, who has previously provided testimony concerning the relationships between rival gangs and the record labels associated with them. His testimony has included allegations about how the firearm allegedly moved between people inside the Cadillac.
Other witnesses could include Malcolm Greenidge, a friend who was travelling with Shakur’s entourage, and Reggie Wright, a former Death Row security figure who grew up in Compton.
The prosecution may also call former police officers, detectives and specialists familiar with gang activity.
The defense is expected to present a much smaller case, with only a few witnesses potentially taking the stand. One anticipated defense witness is an expert who specializes in false confessions and coercive interrogation methods.
The presence of several high-profile figures could also draw considerable attention to the proceedings.
Knight, who was sitting beside Shakur when the shooting occurred, remains one of the most important potential witnesses because he was inside the vehicle during the attack. He is currently serving a lengthy prison sentence in California for a separate fatal incident.
Whether Knight will ultimately testify remains uncertain. His testimony could be particularly significant because he is one of the few surviving people who directly experienced the shooting from inside one of the vehicles involved.
Sean “Diddy” Combs has also been the subject of speculation surrounding the trial. Davis previously alleged in his memoir that Combs had offered money for an attack against Knight and Shakur, an allegation Combs has denied. Combs is not listed among the publicly identified witnesses, and there has been no confirmation that he will appear in court.
The case therefore goes beyond the question of who fired the fatal shots. Prosecutors must convince jurors that Davis played a sufficiently important role in the killing to be held criminally responsible, even if he was not the person holding the weapon when Shakur was shot.
For nearly 30 years, the circumstances surrounding Tupac Shakur’s death have remained a defining mystery in hip hop culture. The upcoming trial gives prosecutors an opportunity to present their case in full and gives Davis the chance to challenge the allegations against him.
The proceedings may finally provide a clearer account of what happened that night in Las Vegas, although they may not resolve every unanswered question surrounding one of the most enduring mysteries in music history.
