American Robert Gilman Released From Russian Detention

American Robert Gilman has been released from Russian detention and is on his way back to the United States, bringing an end to a detention that lasted several years and raised growing concerns about his health.

Gilman’s release was confirmed Tuesday by two US officials and Global Reach, an organization that has been advocating for his family. The former Marine had been held in Russia since 2022.

His return comes after mounting concern over his physical and psychological condition during his time in custody.

Robert Gilman Released After Years in Russian Custody

Global Reach said Gilman is being transported to a US military hospital in Texas, where doctors are expected to conduct a comprehensive assessment of his condition.

The organization said the evaluation will include both medical and psychological care as Gilman begins his recovery in the United States.

His family has traveled to Texas to be reunited with him. His mother had previously traveled to Russia in an attempt to visit her son while he was receiving treatment there.

The family’s presence in Texas means they will be able to support Gilman as he receives care and begins adjusting to life outside detention.

Robert Gilman to Receive Medical Treatment in US

A US official confirmed that Gilman is receiving medical attention and is making his way back to the United States.

The decision to transfer him for treatment follows serious concerns about his wellbeing that had emerged during his detention.

For his family, the release represents a significant development after years of uncertainty. The immediate priority is now expected to be his recovery and determining the extent of the medical and psychological care he requires.

Gilman’s case had attracted attention because of his prolonged detention and concerns surrounding his health. His return also comes against the backdrop of ongoing tensions between Washington and Moscow over the treatment and detention of Americans in Russia.

For now, Gilman’s arrival in the United States marks a new chapter. After years in Russian custody, he will receive care closer to his family as doctors assess his condition and help him begin the process of recovery.
