King Charles III Concludes First State Visit to the United States

WASHINGTON — King Charles III and Queen Camilla concluded their first state visit to the United States on Thursday, wrapping up a four-day tour that took them to Washington, D.C., New York City and Virginia amid renewed efforts to reinforce the long-standing relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States.

The visit came at a time of diplomatic challenges between the two allies over international security issues and featured high-level meetings with President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, a rare address by the British monarch to a joint meeting of Congress, business and cultural engagements, and ceremonies honoring military service and shared history.

The royal couple departed from Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on Thursday afternoon, with King Charles continuing on to Bermuda, a British Overseas Territory.

White House Welcome and State Dinner

The visit began with a ceremonial welcome at the White House, where President Trump and the first lady greeted King Charles and Queen Camilla on the South Lawn. The ceremony included military honors, performances of the national anthems of both countries, a troop review and a 21-gun salute.

In his remarks, Trump described the United Kingdom as one of America’s closest friends and highlighted the shared history and values linking the two nations. King Charles later joined the president for meetings at the White House, where the two leaders exchanged gifts before attending a state dinner.

During the dinner, Trump praised the British monarch and joked about the bipartisan reception Charles would later receive in Congress. The king’s toast combined humor with expressions of sympathy following a recent violent incident in Washington, while emphasizing the enduring partnership between the two countries. Charles also presented the president with the bell from HMS Trump, a British vessel from the Second World War.

The state dinner was attended by senior government officials, Supreme Court justices, business executives and prominent figures from the worlds of sports and entertainment.

Address to Congress

One of the most significant moments of the visit came when King Charles addressed a joint meeting of Congress, becoming the first British monarch to do so since Queen Elizabeth II spoke to lawmakers in 1991.

Speaking to a packed chamber, Charles emphasized the historical ties between Britain and the United States, describing the relationship as one built on reconciliation, renewal and partnership. He urged continued cooperation among democratic allies and stressed the importance of NATO and collective security.

The king also reflected on the shared legal traditions of the two countries, noting the influence of the Magna Carta on American constitutional principles and the concept of checks and balances. His remarks drew bipartisan applause throughout the chamber.

He additionally condemned acts of political violence, stating that such attacks would never succeed in undermining democratic institutions.

After leaving Washington, the royal couple traveled to New York City, where they began the day by visiting the National September 11 Memorial.

They met with families of victims and first responders before laying flowers accompanied by a message expressing solidarity with the American people and honoring those who lost their lives in the September 11 attacks.

Queen Camilla later attended an event at the New York Public Library promoting the Queen’s Reading Room initiative, which encourages reading and literacy. Speaking at the event, she described books as lifelong companions capable of bringing people together across barriers.

King Charles, a longtime environmental advocate, visited Harlem Grown, a nonprofit organization that teaches urban farming and sustainability to young people. He spent time with children participating in the program and helped feed chickens during the visit.

The king also met executives from major companies including Bank of America, Blackstone, JPMorgan, Comcast, Citigroup and Alphabet during discussions on trade, investment and economic cooperation between Britain and the United States.

The New York portion of the visit concluded with a reception held in partnership with the King’s Trust, bringing together business leaders and figures from the cultural and fashion industries to highlight opportunities for youth employment and entrepreneurship.

That evening, the Empire State Building was illuminated in red, white, blue and gold in honor of the royal visit.

Final Day in Virginia

The royal couple spent their final day in the United States in Virginia.

Their first stop was Arlington National Cemetery, where King Charles laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier while Queen Camilla placed a floral tribute. They also visited the Canadian Cross of Sacrifice, honoring American citizens who served and died with Canadian forces during the First World War.

King Charles then toured Shenandoah National Park, meeting National Park Service staff and participating in a Junior Rangers ceremony with children. He also met representatives of the Monacan Indian Nation, whose ancestral lands include parts of western Virginia.

Meanwhile, Queen Camilla visited Smitten Farm near The Plains, Virginia, where she learned about the American horse racing industry. Speaking with farm owners, she remarked that owning and breeding racehorses involved “many more downs than there are ups” and described the visit as “a lovely way to finish off this trip.”

The couple later traveled to Front Royal, Virginia, where they joined local celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the United States. They watched a community parade featuring marching bands, cheerleaders and classic cars and greeted members of a local Little League baseball team.
