WASHINGTON — A shooting incident disrupted the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner late Saturday at the Washington Hilton, sending guests scrambling for cover and prompting the swift evacuation of President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance and other senior officials, according to multiple media reports and law enforcement statements.
Authorities said a suspect was taken into custody after gunfire erupted near the main security screening area outside the ballroom where the black-tie event was underway. The U.S. Secret Service said it was investigating the incident in coordination with Washington’s Metropolitan Police Department.
No fatalities were immediately reported. Several outlets said one federal officer was struck in the chest by a bullet but was protected by a ballistic vest and is expected to recover. Officials had not publicly confirmed additional injuries as of late Saturday.
Eyewitnesses Account
Witnesses inside the venue described scenes of panic after loud bangs were heard. Some guests reportedly ducked under tables while armed agents rushed toward the stage and exits. Video and photos published by news organizations showed Secret Service personnel moving quickly to shield attendees and escort protectees from the room.
The annual dinner, traditionally attended by journalists, politicians and celebrities, was canceled shortly after the incident. Organizers had gathered hundreds of guests for the event, which is considered one of Washington’s highest-profile social and political evenings.

What the Investigators are Saying
Law enforcement officials said the suspect appeared to have acted alone, though investigators were still working to determine a motive. Reports indicated the individual may have been staying at the hotel, a detail authorities were examining as part of the security review.
Trump later said all those under Secret Service protection were safe and praised officers for their rapid response. He also indicated the dinner could be rescheduled at a later date.
