For nearly four years, the mystery of Thomas Phillips and his three children haunted New Zealand. On Monday, that story came to a dramatic end when Phillips was killed in a confrontation with police, and his children — Jayda, Maverick, and Ember were finally found safe.

The saga began in 2021, when Phillips vanished with the children into the dense bush along the country’s rugged west coast. At first, many believed he had simply taken them off-grid.
