Fugitive Father Killed, Children Found Safe After Four Years in Hiding

For nearly four years, the mystery of Thomas Phillips and his three children haunted New Zealand. On Monday, that story came to a dramatic end when Phillips was killed in a confrontation with police, and his children — Jayda, Maverick, and Ember were finally found safe.

Timeline Off-grid

The saga began in 2021, when Phillips vanished with the children into the dense bush along the country’s rugged west coast. At first, many believed he had simply taken them off-grid. But as the months stretched into years, sightings were rare and rumors swirled. The children had no contact with their mother, who waited in anguish for word of them.

On Monday morning, police were called to a break-in at a small farm shop in the town of Piopio. A chase followed, ending when officers stopped a quad bike carrying Phillips and one of the children. Police say Phillips opened fire, wounding an officer in the head. Another officer returned fire, killing him.

Within hours, the other two children were found at a remote campsite in the bush, alone but unharmed. They were taken into police care for medical checks.

“They have been dearly missed every day for nearly four years, and we are looking forward to welcoming them home with love and care. At the same time, we are saddened by how events unfolded today. Our hope has always been that the children could be returned in a peaceful and safe way.”

Their mother, Cat, said she was overwhelmed with relief.

Children Found Safe After Four Years in Hiding

For years, Phillips had managed to elude police, reportedly teaching his children to survive in the wilderness. Each rare sighting sparked headlines, and his family’s plight became a source of fascination and fear. His sister confirmed his death Monday, describing the tragedy as the closing of a painful chapter.

The officer who was shot remains in hospital with serious injuries but is expected to survive. Police say their focus now is on supporting the children and their families as they begin a new chapter of life after years in hiding.
