Fenerbahçe Opet Wins 3rd EuroLeague Title, Defeats Galatasaray

Fenerbahçe Opet capped a dominant season in emphatic fashion, defeating Galatasaray Çağdaş Faktoring 68–55 in an all-Turkish final to win the FIBA Women’s EuroLeague title for the third time in club history.

The championship game, played in Zaragoza, brought together two of Turkey’s strongest sides in a showcase of the country’s growing influence in European women’s basketball. With composure and control, Fenerbahçe pulled away in the latter stages to secure a 13-point victory and add another continental crown to their expanding legacy.

A final shaped by control and experience

Fenerbahçe Opet entered the final as favorites and justified that status with a disciplined performance on both ends of the court. Having already secured a direct place in the semifinals under the competition’s “Final Six” format, they came into the closing stages fresher than many of their rivals.

Their semifinal win over Spar Girona, a convincing 76–59 result, set the tone. By the time they faced Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe had established a rhythm built on defensive intensity and efficient scoring.

In the final, Galatasaray kept the contest competitive early on, but Fenerbahçe’s depth and tactical discipline gradually created separation. By the fourth quarter, the outcome was no longer in doubt, as Fenerbahçe calmly managed the game to secure the title.

The victory highlighted not just individual quality but also cohesion, with the team executing a clear game plan and limiting their opponents’ scoring opportunities in key moments.

A season of near-perfection

The EuroLeague triumph crowned what has been one of the most dominant seasons in recent European club basketball. Fenerbahçe Opet lost just once in 16 EuroLeague games, underlining their consistency against top-tier opposition.

Their success was not limited to the continental stage. Domestically, they swept through every competition they entered. They finished the Turkish Women’s Basketball Super League season unbeaten, while also lifting both the Turkish Cup and the Presidential Cup.

By adding the EuroLeague trophy, Fenerbahçe completed a clean sweep of four major titles in a single campaign, a rare achievement that reflects both squad depth and sustained performance across different formats and levels of competition.

This level of dominance has become increasingly characteristic of the club in recent years. While earlier seasons saw them fall short in finals or settle for podium finishes, the current era has been defined by converting opportunities into championships.

Building a European powerhouse

With this latest success, Fenerbahçe Opet now have three EuroLeague titles from seven final appearances. Their recent back-to-back triumphs in the 2022–2023 and 2023–2024 seasons, followed by this latest victory, signal a period of sustained excellence at the highest level.

The team’s rise mirrors broader investment and development in Turkish women’s basketball, which has steadily increased its competitiveness against traditional European powerhouses from Russia, Spain and France.

Head coach Miguel Méndez played a central role in that evolution. By securing his fourth EuroLeague title, he further cemented his reputation as one of the most successful coaches in the competition’s history.

Méndez previously won three consecutive EuroLeague titles with UMMC Ekaterinburg, one of the dominant teams of the previous decade. His ability to replicate that success with Fenerbahçe highlights both tactical expertise and adaptability across different squads and leagues.

Under his leadership, Fenerbahçe have combined disciplined defense with fluid offensive systems, allowing them to control games against a wide range of opponents.

Turkish basketball’s growing European footprint

Fenerbahçe’s latest title also contributes to a broader milestone for Turkey’s presence in European women’s basketball. Clubs from the country have now won 10 European titles across various competitions, reflecting a steady rise in both investment and performance.

Fenerbahçe account for half of those titles, underscoring their role as the flagship of Turkish women’s basketball. Other clubs have also made significant contributions, including Galatasaray, Yakın Doğu Üniversitesi, and ÇBK Mersin.

The all-Turkish final in Zaragoza served as a clear illustration of that progress. Once considered challengers to established European teams, Turkish clubs are now setting the standard and competing against each other for the continent’s biggest prize.

A benchmark season

For Fenerbahçe Opet, the 2025–2026 campaign will likely be remembered as a benchmark in club history. Winning every major domestic trophy while dominating the EuroLeague places this team among the elite squads of the modern era.

Beyond the trophies, the manner of their victories stands out. Consistency, depth and tactical clarity allowed them to navigate a demanding schedule without significant setbacks. Their single loss in EuroLeague play further emphasizes how rarely they were outperformed.

As European women’s basketball continues to evolve, Fenerbahçe’s model offers a blueprint for sustained success. Strong investment, experienced coaching and a balanced roster have combined to create a team capable of maintaining dominance across multiple seasons.

With three EuroLeague titles now secured and a core group still at the peak of its powers, Fenerbahçe Opet appear well positioned to remain a central force in the competition for years to come.
