The Britannia Copper Mine operated from 1904 to 1974, producing an impressive 6,349 tonnes (7,000 tons) of ore per day at its peak – that’s equivalent to about 350 school buses worth of ore every single day. Thanks to the support from the mining community and federal and provincial governments, the Britannia Beach Historical Society founded the BC Museum of Mining in 1974 – (which was later renamed to the Britannia Mine Museum). When the final whistle blew on November 1st, 1974, it marked the end of a 70-year legacy as one of the world’s largest copper mines. The site reopened as a museum in the summer of 1975, preserving the stories of over 60,000 people who once called Britannia home.
